The Blades of Grass Remember

Contributed by ShadowDaughter on Thursday, 18th March 2004 @ 08:16:32 PM in AEST
Topic: NaturePoetry

the blades of grass remember

they remember a time when the atoms
that had formed them
were bits of stardust and flame and light
and when those tiny specks came together
to form their regal ancestors.

They remember a time when the word "green"
was a word near as stunning as "moonlight"
and when splashes of lush and all shades of jade
colored more than they did not
and the world was awash in the hues

the blades of grass remember a time
when “blade” was important as “grass”
and they stood straight as their steel namesakes
and when they sang ditties to the beaming Sun
in the manner of wolves to the Moon

they remember a time when the Sun would reply
as they begged for a slice more of light
(by the shaft, by the beam, by the ray, how they hungered!)
and when they received a light-laced response
and danced for that gold they’d received

they remember a time when they stood oh-so-proud
tall and fine, never crippled and bent
and when fauna would walk around the stalks
lest their emerald glory, it disturb
and admire their dew and freshness

the blades of grass are in a time
when the creatures have drifted away
and a different kind holds sway over all
and when none bother to move aside for them
but rather crush, and kill them, without thought

they’ve entered a time when the world feels brown
no friendly green shades left for them
and when they gasp for water, feel dry, feel cold,
and are bent and broken daily

but the blades of grass remember
so do I . . .

A very thought-provoking write... I somewhat agree with you, but not completely. But regardless, it's a beautiful poem. Lovely images. I really enjoyed it!

Stunning, really. And it hurts to know we've all walked on blades of grass at some point and not paid them any heed. I suppose the blades could as easily be the sky as the ground, and they'd be as loved and written about as the sky is... It would've never occurred to me to write about the ground rather than the sky. People have their heads in the clouds, these days. Thank you for creating this wonderful piece.

Keep writing,
-Eve.

I think that's beautiful. I felt like crying after reading it even though I'm not sure why.

Ah, the hand of God is always beautiful, isn't it? Yet we humans run around trying to replace it with our clumsy hands, ruining so much. It makes one very sad sometimes.
Keep it up.

Nora, I agree with every written word here. Excellent work. I never heard of a person doing this before though. Have you always done this? I mean, walk around the grass and not on it? *S* Cynthia
