The Boat Poem

My life is a boat, once proud and strong
My sails were so bright, my stern was so long.
Whoever captained me kept me on course
I had galley slaves, but never used force.
The tiller was stubborn and my anchor steel
But everything went on an even keel.
The waters have been more choppy of late
The vessel bouncing towards its fate.
Some rats have left, thinking it sinking
The cats are hungry and the captain is thinking,
“Whatever happens now is not my command”
His once steady hands are holding out for land.
His eyes are worried but his heart is still strong
His face shows the signs of travelling long.
Now the boat is in unchartered waters
Tie down your sons and lock up your daughters.
For ahead may be the perfect storm
Sail straight and northerly, stay true to form
My boat may be wrecked soon, the crew may be going
The waves are foreboding the tides ebb and flowing
Taking on water things may look bleak
But there’s a new hope of dawn at the start of each week
We may all end up in a nautical grave
But until then the ship can do worse than be brave.
One day this may all just seem like a dream
As the decks are scrubbed down and are cleaned.
Who can tell what the future will hold
All we now is the ship’s heart must be bold
For not every vessel’s cargo is pure
And deserves to find its perfect shore.
I urge every traveller on life’s choppy sea
To keep their ship floating and they will be free
