One Hour Photo, Eight Hour Migraine

Contributed by Vitreous_Soul on Wednesday, 17th March 2004 @ 08:47:50 PM in AEST
Topic: hbadday

So it begins, another sweatshop day
Is my mind prepared to jump in the fray
Filled with dread I pass through a sliding door
Reluctantly I step onto the sales floor

To be called a certified photo specialist
Certified lunatic more accurately fits
Flourescent lights burn and ignite this retail hell
Shining bright upon mindless hordes of clientelle

It all seems so simple, yet there's so much trouble
Is it so hard to decide single or double?
When orders are late they get mad and start cursin'
I glare at them and say "i'm only one person!"

In they walk, here it comes, it's just another roll
Blankly look at me and ask "habla espanol?"
They hand me their camera, ask to see the functions
I give a smug reply "where are the instructions?"

Bad pictures abound, you can take it to the bank
One of every six rolls will surely come out blank
Five-year-old film they find at home amidst clutter
Twenty-four shots of a finger on the shutter

How can anyone buy Advanced Photo System?
Ignorant consumers can't seem to resist them
Why do they wait a week to come and get reprints
So much cheaper at first; it just makes too much sense

Impatience grows rampant, frustration is grinding
Nightmares bring the sound of film advance wheels winding
And thus the day drags on, opposite of heaven
No solace found 'til the hour strikes eleven

Still the bitter taste lingers on, from this day so vile
Unprepared for when I next traverse the (Wal)green mile

I have to tell you that I bit a whole in my jaw to supress my laughter. I wouldn't allow myself to laugh because you had a horrific day but I must admit it was truly funny. I really loved this poem and I liked this writing style alot. Lots of humor in it although it sounds like a bad day. I also learned some stuff about film and ummm I admit i'm like one of those customers who takes film in like after two years being on top of the refrigerator! Now hang in there because tomorrow will be better right? Say it with "Yes of course it will be".... Kie

Me, laughing? 'Course not. No, I've never worked in a one hour photo, but I can understand this. I've seen the people at the counter. This has fantastic use of sarcasm. =D

Keep writing or work two shifts,
-Eve.

By all means, feel free to laugh! If there had been a category called "having a humorously bad day" then I would have used that! Glad you liked it though, laugh away my friends! I was laughing hysterically when I wrote it!

Truly,
-V.S.

So this is what goes on behind the developer's curtain/counter . . ?
How intriguing!
Oh, the perils of wage-slavery . . . hehe. This has given me an idea or two for recounting some woeful workdays of my own . . .
Thanks for sharing.

Oh Dan it's not nice to laugh.
But when I had my own shop in Vail.
I dealt with customers pell mell.
Some days I would have like to kill

That's against the law.....that' nil
Dont' let them get you down.
It's not you fault...just let it run
from your back like water off a duck!
And Good Luck
This was a great poem all right!!!

VS, THIS is precious. I love it. It's filled with everything a good poem should have from beginning to end. Fantastic! What is someone with your IQ doing in this place? Looking for your purpose? Reminds me of my days at Sears. Delightful!

it could be worse. you could work in the customer service department (or whatever department handles refunds and exchanges) at wal-mart on the day after xmas.

but still, a sh*tty day and a damn fine scrawl. i'm not usually big on rhymers, but it didn't take away from this one at all.
