I was west coast bound from a Texas town back when it was cold enough to swear.
The policeman said: "City limits are straight ahead.
Don't you hitch-hike till your there.
I said ;"O.K." and:"By the way,
is this walk gonna take awhile?"
That's when he started to grin,
then said: "That depends,
on how fast you can walk twenty miles."
I already said it was cold,
but I was young and quite bold.
So I put myself to that test.
With my leg muscles straining,
it started in raining.
Just nineteen more miles to a rest.
I covered that ground from the center of town,
as the tempreture dipped below freezing.
I left San Antone, wet to the bone,
just as a west Texas wind started breezing.
And after twenty miles?
There was noplace in sight , that was open all night,
and I needed to thaw out real soon.
So I kept to my stride and I prayed for a ride,
passing time by singing this tune;
(Slow down people,i'm headed back west.
I know I haven't shaved for days, and don't look my best.
I know my clothes are dirty , but I do need to rest.
please slow down and give me a ride.
Twenty-six miles from the center of town
I came across a sign.
It said; TWENTY-FOUR HOUR TRUCKSTOP
TEN MILES UP THE LINE
That was when I knew I might not make it.
But with twenty-six behind me i'll try and take it.
I was eight miles from that truck stop
when I came upon a doe.
Eighty pounds of car hit deer on the ground,
still alive, but just barely so.
I thought of my self lying there, then said;
"I don't know.
Maybe we'll make it, maybe we won't.
What the hell, lets go."
Twenty-eight miles behind me.
A half dead deer across my back.
Besides being cold and icy,
I'm having a be kind to animals attack!
But there is seldom a happy ending,
when a car and a deer collide.
I don't think we had traveled one full mile
when that bundle of misery died.
I can't tell you what made me happier.
Was it the animals ending of pain?
Or that I could put down that burden,
and not have to touch it again.
I only know that I walked on, till i made it to the light, and the warmth of that truck stop.
I drank coffee the rest of that night.
When I got there, the waitress asked me,
how i reached their place?
I said;"Mmmaaaaammmm, frrruhhmm
SSann AAnntonne tuhh hhere issnt thhaat
ffarr aah wawalk." That put a look on her face!
Also in a mood to talk.
So I shivvered out my story.
I even told her about the deer.
She gave me lots of coffee.
I saw her shed a tear.
She said;"That was crazy. That was kind."
And:"Why did you do that for?"
I told her that I didn't know ,
but I will always wonder,
how it would have felt
to have walked that deer through her door.
By morning I was feeling better,
just glad to be alive.
To hell with this Texas weather.
This hound dog will surrive.

Although you must have been miserable I laughed all the way thru your poem. It was hillarious. I also thought it was excellent! Kie |

Living in Texas and knowing that area well, I am surprised you made it. Those winds can be bad and those freezes even worse. I would be interested to know if you made it through without being very sick after the ordeal.

awesome write. I must admire your perseverence and stopping to help a doe in the midst of all of it incredible.Thankyou for giving me an entire new look at the 24 hour truckstops.I used to long haul and at times the truckstops were the very least of places I wanted to see but thank god they are there for moments like you had and for the rest of the tired truckers and travlers out there!! I have seen some of Texas wild weather as well! Welcome to YPDC!!

Excellent story, told in the manner of a neo-bard. Made me almost believe that you'd done it for real!

A real humanatarian! It's nice to know that people out there really still care. Loved the story. And when I got to your listing of poems, I spotted alot of your stuff that I've already read and commented on. I'm already a fan of your writes. I like the way you write, your way of expression. And thank you for taking the time to read my post. ; 0 ) Thumps |
