Looking back I realise why I'm so confused these days
The simple fact of the matter is, parents are to blame
When I was so tiny they encouraged me to speak
As soon as I mastered walking without falling to stop
I was told abruptly to sit down and shut up
Such pearls of wisdom I used as my guide
Recalling them vividly from countless times
Don't talk to strangers, but you sat me on his knee
Bushy white beard, red suit, my once a year friend
Yet too scared to walk past the man down the street
Every little lie in my life that I've ever told
I still check the mirror to see if my nose has grown
I worry that my eyes are square from watching too much TV
Making a face on a windy day is something I still avoid
I remember they said the wind might change and that I'd forever stay that way
On a bus or train or any crowded place, I would love to chat a while
But I still hold true to that sacred rule, speak only when spoken to
I would share anything, as instructed so to do
If I had some friends to share with, but nobody said hello
Just me alone in the big wide world, crowded with no-one I know
When I'm very old will I have regard for anyone at all ?
Respect your elders they would say, but where will they be ?
Still strangers I expect, long forgotten in the ground
Dangerous things I simply do not do, mindful of mothers tone
Don't come running to me when you break both your legs !!
It's a stressful life remembering this, doing that and avoiding the other
Eating my greens, being early to bed, never crying over spilt milk
The advice and help they have given me throughout my early years
Always there to remind me, a wry smile creeps across my face
Parents say the funniest things, but we love them anyway !!

oh my goodness. I couldn't help but laugh! My mother as I am sure everyone's is...is captured so PERFECTLY in this poem! I believe this is one of my favorites. So wonderfully written. My mother use to tell me you spend the first two years teaching them (children) to walk and talk and the rest of their lives telling them to sit down and shut up. Thank you for posting this poem. I can't go on enough about how much I loved it! ~~~ WOW!!! where is the 10 when a 5 just wont do?! |
