Talking To The Answering Machine
The phone rings,
Once, twice,
My heart begins to throb harder and harder.
It feels as though it surely will,
beat right out of my chest at any moment.
The ringing grows louder and louder inside my head,
As the sounds grows,
The world around me fades.
My eyes no longer focus on the room around me.
Suddenly,
Just as my hopes had reached it's limit,
The answering machine tears them down,
And stomps them.
And that's how it will be,
Because I have spent my life,
Talking to the answering machine...

Nicely written, it's short but still manages to build a sense of anticipation and then crushed hope. |
