Looking Behind

Contributed by twinkletoes on Sunday, 7th March 2004 @ 08:43:40 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

When a man looks behind, to his foggy past
And each new feeling he’s given, does not seem to last.
He does not ask, “Why do I dwell, on my memories so?”
Nor does he contemplate why time is such a foe.

When a man looks behind, he denies his destiny
And does not see his life, as such a mystery.
It becomes a routine habit, of just another day
Instead of standing upright, his mettle begins to sway.

When a man looks behind, his spirit starts to shrink
Only of himself he will surley think.
Life will lose its wonder, new roads become too rare,
And when it comes to wisdom, he will have none to share.

When a man looks behind, on his life and dreams-
Time has been cruel or so the calendar seems.
“Where did those years go, just what have I done?”
If he cast his mind forward he’d realise, life has just begun.

That was a lovely poem, it made me open my eyes and think a bit. The last line especially stirred me. Well done.

Sam grew up with my grandad on my father's side. I wrote it for him but not to him, he has never seen it. Wrote it about 18 mths. ago. I chose to put it here because of Sam, was thinking of him over the weekend.

you are right twinkles, your insight, talent, and depth on human nature amaze me more and more with each poem and comment of yours i read, and although this was written for your friend in kindness, it sounds so much taken a different way like my x i had to smile, hes a sooky one though, and has no future, for as you wrote so eloquently in this poem, one has to look ahead and/or live in the moment, then there will always be life to live:) hugs n' love nessa
