Seventy-three

Sometimes I just stand in public restrooms
like I'm fifteen the boys
wait outside.
My husband is impatient.
Typical girls, they used to say,
did you fall in, they'd say.
That one used to be a joke but
now it's quite possible.
The flickering florescence shows my hands,
seventy-three year old crypt-keeper skin rolling
over brittle bones beneath.
Can you get botox in your hands? (They give away my age.)
Already got it in my forehead. (I frown too much.)
Cheekbones. (My husband says defined cheekbones are beautiful.)
Corners of my eyes. (Crows are my least favorite bird.)
Breast lift. (Gravity is your enemy, girls.)
Liposuction in my thighs. (My sad old worn-out thighs.)
Tummy tuck. (But I still wear an old-woman one-piece when I swim.)
I analyze my entire body
in this bright-bulbed bathroom so unnatural.
But I left my hair
alone.
I just left alone.
It sits there almost wavy, constantly thinning.
My husband finds balls of it in the bathtub but
that's not even embarrassing anymore.
And oh, the grey! Or is it gray?
Either way, it's far from the youthful brown it was,
and I don't even pull it back like I used to.
It just keeps my shoulders company.
Sometimes they get lonely since
my husband doesn't even kiss them
anymore.

Magnolia,
I enjoyed this. You have the self-deprecating ability to laugh at yourself. Well done.

Angels fly lightly because they don't take themselves seriously.....and when you look for the negative...you'll find it. Why do that...think positively....and look for the best....then you can rest,
your ugly thoughts my dear. I'm 67, but I never stand infront of mirror.......concentrate on your positive, and allieviate the negative...try to hit a happy medium inbetween
This was a wonderfuly written poem. Very
honest too!

It's creeping up on me day by day. I don't mind the age so much as that danged gravity. It's a bummer! I love your sense of humour and your writing style. Welcome, my friend, and rainbows to you!
