Until the planes came soaring through the sky, we were a country in the dark.
Then the lights suddenly flashed on,
Lights of the filthy, squalid fires blazing within our beloved landmarks.
Nobody ever could have imagined the disaster that was about to ensue that morning.
Husbands, mothers, sisters, sons, all went off to works as usual.
They had no way of knowing that this day would be their last.
In one brief moment, the future of our country was forever changed.
We sat in silent terror as we watched magnificent buildings collapse,
Extinguishing the lives of more people than most of us see in the course of an entire day.
The heartache, the horror, the helplessness mounted throughout the nation
As the news filtered in about the severity of the disaster.
We wanted so badly to rectify it all, but where could we even begin?
Everything that we always trusted and believed in suddenly seemed challenged.
The rules of life no longer seemed to apply,
And at once we realized that nothing in the universe is infallible.
Death and destruction had pierced the heart of the nation.
Our lives would never be the same.
We were already such different people than those we awoke as that morning.
What kind of person could have wished this on any country?
Civilized human beings do not commit such abominable acts,
But then, we already knew that we were not dealing with a humane force.
Even so, we were not at war with anyone at all.
And the land attacked did not shelter military forces.
Why take the lives of thousands of innocent civilian workers?
September 11, 2001 is a day that will weigh heavily in our hearts for eternity.
Yet the day was one of more beauty than our nation has ever seen previously,
For that was the day when we finally abandoned all barriers and joined hands.
Throughout the nation, citizens of all races, religions, and cultures gathered together to give aid.
We immediately stocked more food than could possibly be delivered,
And collected more blood than necessary for transfusion, even in the face of such carnage.
And in New York, firemen, police forces, healthcare professionals, and bystanders rose to action immediately.
Without hesitation, they began a rescue mission for which they didn't even know their objectives.
There was no time to question; they were willing to do whatever was needed of them at any moment.
Never again can it be said that our country is rich, selfish, and cowardly.
We suffered unimaginable loss, yet our last concern was the financial ruin that inevitably would follow.
We proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that we are a strong, brave, and altruistic people.
Death and destruction had pierced the heart of the nation.
But America was born, not buried on that day
Because we joined hands, and we still stand united.
