beneath the shadow of the cross
i kneel and whisper prayers
be my guide when i am lost
hold my hand and ease my fears
stain glass window, smoky light
the priest is by my side
to battle i will go tonight
and try to turn the tide
the cathedral stands silent as death
the men all wait outside
the priest comes out, our souls to bless
and to the storm we ride
the enemy waits, an evil horde
twenty thousand strong
but we we're chosen by the lord
we will right this wrong
i ride across our frontline
our numbers fierce but small
i scream my words to rouse the men
for country and for God
the battles joined, the enemy swarms
like beasts from hell they fight
i scream for God to guide my sword
i know that we are right
a sea of bloody faces flow
but we will turn the tide
stinging rain, the wind does blow
lightning flashes in the sky
with strength we battle through the night
to slay the horrid beasts
'till the rays of morning light
breaking in the east
in the middle of the fray
i see a mighty cross
the men are yelling victory
although the cause seems lost
i pull the reigns and steer my mount
towards the cross i ride
i'm killing men a hundred count
a hail of arrows fly
wounded, to the ground i fall
engulfed in searing pain
beneath the shadow of the cross
my crumpled body lay
the ocean of the enemy
has dwindled to a stream
the men are yelling victory
i smile like a dream
i struggle then to gain my feet
so i can kneel and pray
beneath the shadow of the cross
we have won the day

Ahh... to fight a battle noble....to stand against foes tidal......to wage a war most holy.... to triump in humble glory. nice one....a poetic incarnation of martial glory and holy zeal. |

Loved it !maybe bias 'cause it's war poetry but you can capture so much about mans inhumanity ( i have got a serious side!) this was a particulary good write.
My first two submissions to this site were war poems but your's is in a class of it's own.
more please.

I love the juxtaposition of the cross and the battle and the power. Nice stuff.

I sit in awe after reading that poem... to put it simply you can just see everything you can play it as a movie in your mind and not with a lot of detail its just like your free to see it on your own it is really really good i am sure you know that but it is... thanks,
