This, A Perfect Summer Evening

A breeze blows calmly
Through the towering trees
Lining the village street
Bird softly sing their
Evening symphonies,
Never out of turn or tune
Their music brightens the
Evening air, softens the mood
Can life can get any better?
Any more peaceful?
Any more beautiful than this
A perfect summer evening.
Screaming tires pierce the calm
Breaking glass shatters the silence
The driver jams the brakes
But never fast enough
The bicycle lies in the street
The wheel spins and spins
Spinning, spinning.
People come outside to see
What has violated their
Picture perfect scene
The silence takes control
The peoples eyes focus
On the body under the car
And the little girls doll
Lying under a tire
Their eyes shift over to
The little girls legs
Disfigured, contorted and
Twisted like a pretzel
The silence reigns supreme
And the crowds gaze shifts
To the little girls head
Oh, the little girls head.
Brain matter spills onto
The reddened pavement
Mixed in with pieces of skull
The silence screams in rage
And the crowds gaze shifts
To the little girls face
Oh, the little girls face
Once a young clean face
Filled with life and joy
Always smiling and loving
The silence tells us all
Of a face of sheer terror
And the up most fright
As it lies on the street
Dirtied, bloodied, and crushed
The flashing lights pull up
The silence deafens the sirens
The lifeless body is taken
Onto the clean stretcher
And a bleached white sheet
Covers the little girls
Haunting face with purity
Silently the doors slam shut
The ambulance drives off.
The people return indoors
Back to their business:
Dinners. TVs, sex, and fights
A breeze blows calmly
Through the towering trees
Lining the bloody street
Bird softly sing their
Evening requiems,
Never out of turn or tune
Their music darkens the
Evening air, intensify the mood
Can life can get any worse?
Any more horrifying?
Any more moribund than this
A perfect summer evening.
