Tragedy Sells

Contributed by Breathe on Thursday, 12th September 2002 @ 06:10:57 AM in AEST
Topic: AmericanTragedy

i heard the concrete fall a year ago
at work they wouldn't let me hear the radio
i worked retail i stocked cards and i tagged t-shirts
then sat outside and smoked until my lungs hurt
the grain of the wall it can't feed all the people inside it
the pain of the one in this culture run so you can buy it
places for cars and places for bars places to hide in
this place is so great i mean this is so great can't deny it
but i can't stop smoking
i stay up later every night
stars are losing to the light
of spokane and phoenix and brooklyn
i'm still looking
and the masses who've never known anything else
cry together lie to feel right but they keep it to themselves
those ignoble phallouses mourned though they kept humanity shelved
i cant stop smoking i mean i CANT stop smoking
i turned off my tv
it can't reflect me
it will give us reruns
of georgie and donnie and dickie
the people don't know they're neither en masse or alone
the people don't know because they don't want to be shown
the people the people the people the people they moan
and the cities they sound just like hell
and the moment the first of the two towers fell
they looked and they ran and they ran and they fell
and some cried cause they thought they'd heard their last trading bell
and i cant stop *****
cant stop ***** smoking
they told me to shop and i thought they were joking
i'll buy condoms and cartons i'll buy magazines
i'll buy papers and beer and believe what i read
***** you for telling me how we all feel
you've broken my pencil and hardened my will
now i type out my anger on my pentium dell
and i laugh like a cynic i smoke just as well
as jet feul on paper you know tragedy sells
