My Prison

Contributed by angelface on Wednesday, 3rd March 2004 @ 12:08:20 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

Within moments the room was different
Tension filled the air
It crept in like smoke, choking my lungs
I could smell it in my hair.
Nervous glances were quick to follow,
Messages whispered through silent eyes.
Furtive looks found their way toward me,
Under smiles made to disguise.
Hushed words turned to quiet conversation.
Their not so subtle glances a little more bold.
A shrill laugh was stifled behind me,
And I shivered as I if were cold.
The room seemed to be getting smaller,
As though it was shrinking into a cell.
The walls were closing in upon me,
Surrounding me in my hell.
I wanted to escape the pressure,
But it was as if I myself was locked in.
Their eyes were like my prison guards,
Punishing me for an unknown sin.
I felt myself begin to get angry
As hot blood swept through my veins.
How dare they be so invasive?
So keen to get a glimpse of my pains
I stepped a little further into the room
Walking what felt like the Green Mile,
But they watched me just like a jury,
And I felt as if I was on trial.
A distant voice broke into the silence,
Replacing the nervous tension with surprise.
"What's wrong with you all?" it screamed,
"Can't you look into my eyes?"
After sharing uncertain glances,
Their eyes became fixed on the floor.
The tension was now suffocating,
I couldn't take it anymore.
As I turned and fled from their stares,
The tears streaming down my face,
A thought flashed through my mind,
Maybe prison was the better place

well done. This poem made my skin crawl, from the tension and your amazing description of the suffocating environment.
