Long Tans' Sand

My mind drifts away high above a scene
Smoke hangs in the air land now quiet and serene.
I float above the ground so high watching a young man
He collects a pinch of sand from a place we call Long Tan.
What brings you back old man, why have you come?
Do you wish to relive the glory of the fighting that you’ve done?
Is it just a curiosity or to cling to memories?
What has brought you back this ANZAC day to fall upon your knees?
I glide back to the grove where I have been and gone
This battleground is mine, forever to belong
I surrender to recollections as I look around this place
To see the battle again with an enemy of Eastern race.
We dive for scanty cover battle on through the night
Bloody good men fell there; their first and last fight.
Their sounds and forms surround me calling to each other
Wounded screaming, sobbing, crying for their mother.
Sounds of flying metal an exploding mortar shell
Bodies, blood, limbs lye; this is worse than hell
I am awakened from my daze by the sound of a band to play
Australia’s National Anthem my turn for a wreath to lay.
For years I have been living with the sights of that next dawn
So at every ANZAC day for those young mates I must mourn
A Nation still a child holds my shaking hand
“ You are a hero.” it says, late words for this old man.
Words I wish I had not to hear nor ceremonies to attend
But to those fallen comrades it’s a gesture to amend.
To amend the hasty words said, back here at their home
They only did what was asked and should never be alone.
There is nothing they can say to forget those young boy’s plight
Their comradeship will always haunt Long Tan’s battle sight.
No one can replace them nor will I feel solace from this band
That’s why I forever carry, that pinch of Long Tan’s Sand.

This is an excellent write. I read a piece once about this battle. War only ever leaves haunting memories for those left. The living 'heroes' fight the battle forever.
