The Shadows on the Wall

The Shadows on the Wall

As she lays in her room recalling the night
The shadows dance and kindle her fright
Why is she so afraid, what went wrong
He is a gentle man a singer of song…

The cold wind blows through the window
She must get up and close it soon
But for some reason she is paralyzed
As she stares at the bright white moon

She recalls the events of the evening
As he held her close and kissed her again
She remembers the fun they had
And all the places they had been

He treated her with respect
As they traveled from place to place
She remembers the way he looks at her
When he stares gently into her face

She hears a sound, what can it be
As the covers are pulled over her eyes
She wishes he were with her now
He always holds her when she cries

As the shadows grow larger
She continues to remember the day
God she misses him
Why did she push him away

The broken glass is in the sink
She left it for tomorrow
She was so happy that he kissed her
She smiled and forgot her earlier sorrow

Gone, for a moment, is the fear
And she recalls his long tender kisses
His strong arms, his gentle touch
Now she knows what she misses

She reaches out to touch his pillow
And suddenly remembers he is gone
As another song asks the question
She also wonders “…what have I done…”

She is crying as she remembers the past few hours
And the events that brought her to this place
See can see it as clear as reality
She relives the memory that is in her face…

“The door closes quietly behind him
As he shuffles down the long dark hall
She crawls into bed and turns off the light
The light and foreign objects cast a shadow on the wall”

The painful question continually haunts her
About her only lover, her Number One
She cries out in the night “will someone please - please - please tell me…
I am begging you… What in God’s name have I done?”
