The Longest Night

The Longest Night

You inspire me he whispered
As he slid across the seat
Wait a minute she cried
As she reached for the lever of retreat

Taking a breath he pulled away
That was not what he meant
She was afraid he would hurt her
She thought that after the evening they spent?

Ok honey, it is ok I will take you home
I never intended to scare or bring you any harm
As the car pulled onto the highway
She was glad that the night air was warm

They rode off in complete – debilitating silence
She just did not know what to say
How will he be tomorrow when he sees her?
Will he speak or will he walk the other way

They arrive at the apartment two flights up
And he walks her to the door
She knows now as she invites him in
That he did not think she was a whore

He sits alone on the large paisley sofa
She stands in the kitchen pouring a drink
He walked up behind her and kissed her neck
She dropped the glass in the sink

Together they walk down the hall to the front door
He holds her tightly and she brushes away a tear
As he kisses her goodnight she feels loved again
Suddenly she is comfortable and there is no fear

The door closes quietly behind him
As he shuffles down the long dark hall
She crawls into bed and turns off the light
The light and foreign objects cast a shadow on the wall
