THE SHY WIZARD

the shy wizard

by a. climo

There once was a shy wizard
or so the people said
who lived beneath the flowers
out back behind the shed

folks say the powers he had
would amaze the ancient gods
but with all these wonderful powers
he hid beneath dead logs

nearly no one saw him
to see him but a glance
and for him to smile upon you
you had less of a chance

but still kings came in numbers
to see the wizards gifts
but the time spent a talking
was short sweet and swift

the wizard knew well his power
he could build or destroy a world
but what he lacked with all his wealth
was his own sweet lady girl

so the shyest of the wizards
hid his lonley face
neath dead logs and flowers
out back in his lonely place

then they say came a day
when a princess passed his way

she asked of him a special wish
one he had not heard
she asked of him only this
that the cup of life be stirred

the wizard thought upon this wish
for the better part of two suns
then sent the frogs a searching
to bring her back to him

without haste the frogs went jumping
through flower covered fields
until upon her they came
canvas as her shield

she mounted her only steed
and rode through black with dread
till dawn with frogs beside her
out back behind the shed

my princess i have considered
but i truly tell you this
tis the last one I grant
until I get my wish

the princess looked upon him
forgetting the past nights dread
and with frogs abound and jumping
she kissed upon his head

the wizard then took a silver spoon
and placed it in a silver cup
and began to stir so gently
the life to mix it up

the wizard then spoke to the princess
and proclaimed the magic complete
while the princess looked upon him
and smiled ever so sweet

the princess replied to the wizard
I am yours now to keep
for all your coming days
and nights while you sleep

this is your reward
for doing all you have done
for so many lonely nights
and days of dawning sun

the wizard smiled so bright
the flowers began to bloom
a happy tear fell from his eye
that washed away his gloom

the wizard finally realized
this was just a test
not just the cup of life
everything all the rest

so now the shy wizard
is shy himself no more
and he's a busy granting wishes
and they come from every shore

now if you hear the frogs
jumping ang croaking too
it's the princess and the wizard
laughing at me and you

so be careful while out walking
out back behind the shed
and look beneath the flowers
for the lips upon his head
