Porcelain Angel

Contributed by ShadowDaughter on Friday, 27th February 2004 @ 03:45:40 AM in AEST
Topic: oops

porcelain angel
plunged and tumbled far enough
to be, by all rights, fallen
but you were always too much
a creature of heaven
to succumb to the reality of hell.

falls can hurt an angel, though
and though the demons are still
beneath your oh-so-carefully-machine-carved feet,
you've fallen a little too far
for the sky to be as in reach
as it was once upon a time.

neither seraph nor demon,
human, now, perhaps?
quite as tragic as the other . . .

and when you shattered at the bottom
of your seemingly endless descension
I watched helplessly
--so helplessly!--
as you exploded into a thousand pieces
I tried to pick them up, I did
but razor-blade shards are hard to carry

with bloodied, tattered fingers
I brought them back
(I think I got most of them)
to your head
--round and grotesque as it stood on its own--
in a sorry, broken heap.
you smiled in gratitude
that deftly painted, round, red smile
but a jagged crack had appeared,
slicing your smile in two,
from your graceless flight
and it was a shattered smile,
and I grew angry at the world
for inflicting upon you such a fall

we glued the pieces clumsily back together
with a handful of tears
donated from ignorant admirers
of your broken angel wings
as you were saving your own
for the myriad of things
that were, to your mind,
better worth your tears.

perhaps it was mere coincidence
that, when we put the last shard I could find
into its place (your eye)
and tried to cover the gaps
your porcelain seemed to re-form
and your smile smoothed the crack
and your eyes became vacant
as you became yet another porcelain human
factory made
"come on," you murmured,
"can we, like, go home now?
Gilmore Girls is on in a bit
and I don't want to miss this episode."

through fogged eyes of exhaustion
my comprehension of this poem
was less then desired.

However, I got the message, although i was not able to read all of the lines as closely as i would have liked.

It is a sad story... like, omigod....
i enjoyed the last stanza...

cheers,
C+

Wow...

"I tried to pick them up, I did
but razor-blade shards are hard to carry"

That line---the whole damn poem for that matter--is phenomenal. You captured the sadness so well, in a whirlwind of reality intertwined with metaphor. I fall at your feet with my inferior talent.

Truly, with heartfelt CEGH's,
-Dan

Nice write, but I liked this line
"beneath your oh-so-carefully-machine-carved feet," the best.
