She sits by the window,
as she does everyday.
She waits to see him,
come around the way.
He left a few months before,
and she was left with no word.
She thought about the worst,
but was hoping it was just absurd.
Her mother knows the truth,
but she hides it pretty well.
She knows her husband passed,
in that weary soldier's hell.
Yes, her husband was brave.
He was a fighter for the free.
He left just months before,
to fight for what he believed.
He left with gun in hand,
and on his side, a pack.
He left his wife, and daughter,
with promises of coming back.
His daughter writes him letters,
and places them in the mail.
She tells him how much she misses him,
and of her eleven year old tales.
He looks at her from heaven,
and the rain comes tumbling down.
He wishes she could see him,
and he wishes to be around.
Her mother answer many questions,
about the war her daddy is in.
She cannot bring herself to say,
"your daddy did not win."
But here it is months after,
and the war is almost through.
She knows the task at hand,
and prepares for what she must do.
She sits down by her daughter,
and holds her tiny hand.
She hopes she can ease her pain,
and make her understand.
“Honey, there is something wrong.
Something I must say.
Do you remember our talk of heaven,
That beautiful place far away?”
“Yes mommy, you said that,
it was the most beautiful place.
You said that when I get there,
I will get to see God’s face.”
She looked at her beautiful girl,
and knew exactly what to say.
She knew this would hurt them both,
but this was the only way.
“Honey, your daddy went to heaven.
The angels called him home.
He told me to tell you, though,
You will never be alone.“
Her daughter started crying,
and the mother held her tight.
She tried to soothe her weeping,
and tell her it would be alright.
“See your daddy died a fighter,
with a brave story to tell.
He died in that battle abroad,
In that weary soldier’s hell."
