No Shortcut-Byways

Contributed by twinkletoes on Wednesday, 25th February 2004 @ 07:20:06 PM in AEST
Topic: SongLyrics

Life is like a dark old highway
You can never see very far
You are the better man-if you can see further than
Where your lights shine down the tar.
I’m on this dark road going nowhere
In my lights a dimming line
Another job all done-and another is begun
What has happened to my time?
Light specs out there in the darkness
Each one shows a different life
A career of slipping tar-singing songs without guitar
Fear just cuts me like a knife.

(CHORUS)And all I am is older
With more weight upon my shoulder
Where’s this highway heading to?
And life upon this highway
Has got no shortcut byways
And while I drive I think of you.

I drive in darkness never knowing
If I’m going forward or moving back
I need to find out soon-or I’ll keep on playing this tune
Is something out in the black?
I look around in all directions
Tension blinds this country boy
A happy face of a fan-don’t give comfort to this man
Nor does laughing, acting coy.
I follow signs back to my hometown
Back across the swirling streams
You don’t see me at my best-darkness covers this road’s test
As I strive to realise my dreams.
And I see a bright light out there
She shines as brightly as a beam
But I can’t touch her until-I reach the further hill
She lays and waits there in my dream.

(CHORUS)
repeat: And while I drive I think of you.
