It's just a tease

Hope
hope is for others
it's just a tease
offering promises it cant keep
like a one night stand
there and gone
so high, so intense
then you wake up and see it was just an illusion

but it captured you for a moment and made you want more
kept you mesmerised for just long enough that you dared to hope again
and again it left you
but like a bad penny, it comes back to your life
handed to you by well meaning friends
they open their purses and give it to you
shiny and new
you clutch at it like a baby
bright and clean
with this penny you can buy love, happiness, fulfilment
all the things you could wish for

you believe

and then you try to spend it
and realise
that hope cannot be bought
hope comes from within and if you are poor
you are penniless
they say to accumulate you must speculate
but every time you speculate
you lose

your purse of pennies fills up and hangs around your neck
weighing you down like a heavy stone
threatening to drown you

the only thing you can do is cut the strings of the purse and throw it away

you are poor again
but better that than false riches
