For Jeremy, whom I left though not at heart

There are so many things
that I have left behind.
Not enough time to pack them all,
and by now I am so weary.
In this moment I realize
how alone we both felt
but never spoke it aloud,
afraid to be vulnerable
to our own blood.
Knowing that pain (such a word: pain,
as if to describe a person,
or a place we were fond of) is
not such a stranger after all-
familiarity can be like a warm blanket.
Shame has no hearts in the brave,
and you are learning this lesson heavily.
For we are all family,
we all carry encrypted expressions
begging to be deciphered.
It is often said "this too shall pass"
but late is the hour
in which wisdom comes
and sobriety refuses to recognize
such words,
especially when they come
from our own tongue.
Pay no heed to parting tokens or gestures,
like attracts like and I know now
who you are.
I have seen the color
of your tears-
we shall meet again
dear cousin.
