Once, two white people
named Chris and the Mum
set out to beat on
the ultimate drum.
They walk the world over
without any clue
where they should be going
or what they should do.
They settled the land
where flowers can’t grow
and they had made millions
by winter’s first snow.
They left five years later
and wandered about
til they found a village
that they could just rout.
They took all it had
and plundered it bare
they killed off the children
while bound mothers stared.
They boiled the watchdogs
in melted-down snow
and did horrid things
to the rest of the folk.
They soon made it back
to the homeland they left
and spent seven years
praying for the bereft.
After that lengthy shiva
was finally done,
they looked right outside
and realized their drum
was nothing but life
as it pulsed and it flowed
and flowered forever.
Forever they owed.
They couldn’t repent
for their horrible crimes
but came upon wisdom
far greater than rhymes
and realized that all
the world had to show
was the beauty of nature.
There’s no need to go.
So next time you hear
the word “wisdom” you come
and tell me the story
of Chris and the Mum.
