Vietnam

Contributed by Shadow on Sunday, 22nd February 2004 @ 07:42:01 PM in AEST
Topic: war

Held here in darkness away from all dear
I hold my ground without fear
So few of us truly know pain
Us who do they call us insane

Sixteen years old they threw me a gun
Go fight dear boy till the war is won
They screamed and they shout bay killer
O what pain to be my countries pillar

Wave my the flag my old man would say
Till victory is won that O sweet day
Do I fault him for what he thought was right
After I fought in this bitter wars height

To arms they cry charge brave men
This I wish at the time I had been
But I was a boy foolish and brave
To their words I was a slave

When we got home not a crowed did cheer
All we saw was our brave fathers tear
Life wasn’t over it had just begun
I leave it all and throw down the gun

We didn’t lose this horrid fight
I know now that I was right
Onward I go no more tears
The horrid cries no one hears

Bravery is always something to be proud of. I applaud your poem for highlighting the fact that yes, the Vietnam war was horrible and yes, the men who fought in it were brave. But let's not forget the thousands of innocent women and children who were needlessly slaughtered by American hands because of one President's ego driven decision.

I firmly believe that no one is ever forced to something they don't want to, we are all capable of seeing clearly what is right and wrong. If the opposite is true, we couldn't hold a single nazi soldier responsible for his actions.

May all the victims of all the wars rest in peace. And may the war makers die a thousand deaths for the deaths they caused without a second thought.

Deeply touching to me. I wasn't born yet either but I have read and seen footage of what the soldiers came home too. This just breaks my heart. I can't even imagine coming home to what the reception they were given. I love our soldiers and am very proud of them, the sacrifices they make for our country, their bravery and dedication. I loved this poem. It wasn't about politics or rallying for or against some war it was about the soldiers. Thank you for writing something like this. I need to be reminded of things easily forgotten sometimes. ((5)) all the way on this one. Kie

Shadow, thank you for the tribute to these men and women who was all heroes, yet vilifed by our country for following orders from the commander-in-chief. They fought a war that was not our war to fight, as usual, and should have come home praised and not made into monsters. So many lost their lives, livelihoods, and families, not even to speak of the many that lost their sanity over what they had to live through. This is a magnificent piece of work and proves to me you are a true patriot and poet. Rita

A very fitting tribute - I wasn't born then either, nor am I American, but I grew up watching a lot of grim Vietnow flicks and appreciate the sacrifices those soldiers made, in the name of their country.

Very 'Dulce et decorum est.' - that's about as fine a compliment as I can pay this piece.

Only the dead have seen the end of war. (plato I think)

No matter what tribute we lay at the feet of soldiers, it will never be enough. But in honoring the sacrifice of the fallen and returned we at least show that we are with them. Too many times the ordinary have achieved the extraordinary. Rita, well said and Shadow well done. Annon...get a life.

I was one who served in Vietnam as a combat field medic with a recon platoon. There were good days, and there were bad days. I came home to a different country than what I left. I landed in Oakland, CA and in about 10 hours I was on the way home to Chicago. I arrived at the airport and was spit at and spit on and called a baby killer. Some Welcome Home, I am so glad that America has finally learned how to treat those we send away to battle. We may not always believe in the reasons for the war but the soldiers have no choice but to serve. All they ask is just remember me. A large part of the Vietnam Vet getting a bad rap is from John F Kerry who testified in Congress that the Vietnam Vets had committed war crimes. Not in my unit, we took care of the wounded on both sides of the fight. IT WAS MY DUTY AND I WAS HONORED TO DO SO...would I do it over again you bet I would, I am finally proud once again to have been a soldier and a medic who served his country in Vietnam.
Thanks for the support.
