Is It Worth It?

Contributed by mary0005 on Sunday, 22nd February 2004 @ 06:08:39 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

It’s dreaded
Feared
Unwanted.
People spend lifetimes
Trying to avoid it,
To postpone it.

Some look at it optimistically.
Convince themselves:
It can’t all be for nothing.
We weren’t put here to live
And dream
And hope for a brighter future,
If we’re just going to die.
They agree
There is more after.
We live and accomplish
And are judged by it later.

But are we?

We are simply God’s game.
We look to the future
To bring us brighter things.
We work hard
To earn them.
We are eager,
We are strong.
And we die.

All our work,
All our effort
Simply postpones
What we now know to be
The inevitable.

So why do we continue to try?

Because that is the nature of humans.
We are not the smarter animals
Like we so often say we are.
We are fitted with
A stupid stubbornness.
And we don’t learn
From the mistakes.
We never will
For we are a doomed race,
It was evident from the start.
But people avoid
It so much that
We begin to forget to notice.

But not me.
Never me.
I have always been different.

The humans said
I was troubled.
Said I was different.
Looked at me like
I was mad;
Crazy!
And stupid.

But they’ll never know
I was right all along.
I saw past God’s mask,
And won the game
Before ever stepping
On the squares.
Because that’s the only way
You can win.

Once you begin to play,
Death is no longer
A winner’s prize.
But if you take
The prize
At the start,
You have won.

I’m taking myself
From the game.
And,
By doing so,
I will win.

No, it isn't worth it. I agree that life really has no meaning but to be born and then eventually to die someday, and to be forgotten as well. This poem has such a deep, thoughtful, amazing feeling in it. It's so different, and intelligent, it really gets me thinking... this is probably one of the best poems written on this site. Great write :). And you aren't crazy, stupid, or troubled, if this poem has anything to do with you. You are, however, different, in an amazing way.
