Traveling down the alley
Alone in my thought
In a low valley
Where the wars are fought
The Veteran sleeping alone on his bench
Fearless and brave this country he served
Now his clothes carry street stench
More than this, his life deserved
When did life get this way
His battle now fought on the streets of today
The child hungry and cold
Seeking food from your trash
It’ll do just pick off the mold
His mother died in a car crash
When did life get this way
His battle fought on the streets of today
The bag lady pushing her cart
Picking up what we leave behind
Depression hides her beautiful heart
Most people don’t bother to be kind
When did life get this way
Her battle fought on the streets of today
The prostitute on the corner, receiving many a glare
Dreams of college brought her life here
Now for her child she must care
Tuition not getting paid is just one fear
When did life get this way
Her battle now fought on the streets of today
This battle is fought everywhere
By people of every age
Finding a true survivor is rare
Held hostage in poverty’s cage
When did life get this way
The battles fought on the streets of today
