I am warm
I am flesh
I have died on countless battlefields
For those principles that I hold in my heart
Even unto its final beat
I am charlatan
Some men I hate for no reason
Some men I kill for no reason
I justify each thrust of my sword
Each crimson stream I invite from another
Each soul I send to what may be hereafter
With a squeeze of a lever and a blur of sulfur
I feel each scream
As if it issued from my own throat
I feel the rifle
Steady in my hands
An extension of my own efficiency
At once bitter, deadly, calculated
At once a confused effigy of emotion in the fray
The bayonet glimmers off its end
Each time I pierce a man
I pierce my soul
And tears run of its steel end
As blood from my heart
I call myself pure
I call myself a child of god
I call myself a husband, father, son
I die a soldier.
