BISHOP OF THE WORLD

Who would presume himself so wise,
As to declare God's word incomplete;
Then, add unto it, here and there,
From his self exaulted council seat?
He would be a man of great intellect,
More holy than most mortals be,
Or one filled with pride and arrogance:
A branch of Esau's family tree.
I know a man, he's one of these,
And he's dressed in the Bishop's cloth.
He writes, speculates, and pontificates,
And feeds at the Episcopal trough.
He questions the Holy virgin birth,
Assumes Christ took an earthly wife.
He gleaned his evidence from the air,
Or perhaps, in some former life.
The bishop seeks to " unbind God,
From the ignorance of the masses."
The masses see the Bishop bound,
More, with every day that passes.
Yet, he is renowned far and wide,
His books touted here and there.
The secular world can't get enough,
Of his foolishness to declare.
Satan comes at sundry times,
To take men captive at his will.
Not sparing some among God's flock,
Attempting Holy truth to kill.
I pray God's protection for you and me,
Deliverance from this evil fate,
And release for captive Bishop Spong,
Even for Christ's own namesake.
Luke 22:31-32 " And the Lord said, Simon,
Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:but I have
prayed for thee that thy faith fail not: and
when thou art converted , strenghten thy
Brethren. Also: 2 Tim.2:25, 26.

This is a strong, creative, write.
I don't keep up with the bishops of the world but this is good work.
Some people are easily sold on things.
I put my trust in God, not man.

Where is the verse about men gathering those who tell them what their itching ears want to hear? We do live in sad times. Your perspective is right on with what it happening. Good stuff.

Yes indeed Lionel, it is strong stuff, and brilliantly written. It is the poet's job to highlight what displeases and what he senses as dangerous for consumption
.
I myself, highlited boldly the negative sides of our great St. Jerome, because it is held fast in all ecclesiastical literature and engraved in the history books.
The negative sides do not take away from his personal sanctity, though very shocking often to fellowmen. Even to co-religionists.
But there is nothing wrong for a poet to highlight both, as long as the critique is in the spirit of charity.
You are doing what you have to do, I do what I every poet must voice his profoundest conviction without a mask. Absolute t ruth as he sees it.
Perhaps the bishop is in good faith and every believer is free to reject him and his views.
Your poem is excellent, a critique of a over progressive bishop whose lights may shift in a different direction tomorrow.
