"Now tell me," the policeman started to say.
"Can you recall anything before the burglar broke in?"
"Anything at all?"
The policeman stood in front of me with his pen and notepad in hand.
Ready to take down any word I would say.
I just stood there starring at my house.
He signed heavily, then just walked away without saying another word.
Of course I remembered.
I won't ever forget anything that happened in that house.
The broken glass on the floor,
A trail of antique jewelry and credit cards lead to the open front door,
And there was Michael, lying in a pool of crimson red.
"Michael," I called out to him as I ran to his side.
Looking down at him tears flowing down my cheeks.
Falling and creating ripples in the puddle of blood.
He stretched out his arms toward me.
Reaching for me as if to say," Help me, mommy."
Like he did when he was little.
Frantically, I searched for the wound.
His blood palm was pressed against his side, but I couldn't bear to move his hand.
To see what was killing him.
"Michael."
"Michael, stay awake!"
"You have to stay awake!"
He just looked at me.
The light from his eyes had faded.
He was gone.
Just like that.
It only took one second.
Only one to lose what meant the most to me.
And all for what?
Some rusty jewelry and petty money.
I never knew what real pain felt like.
Not until I watched my only son die right in front of me.
When I realized I couldn't do one thing to save him.
The cops came barging in, but it didn't matter.
They were too late to make a difference.
All they could do was just stand there and watch my hold me son.
Crying as I cradled his lifeless body in my arms.

This broke my heart. So sad and unfair that this had to happen. A wonderful dedication you have written to his mother. You have impressed me with your talent and sensitivity. Kie |
