Unspeakable Love

One day, you asked me ‘How dost thou love me?’
And fast awaited a pretty reply,
But I returned ‘I have no words for thee,
Yet listen, sweet, and I shall tell you why.’
‘You know I love thee, but to put to speech
Such feelings that would move Heaven above
Would do them ill-justice, thus I beseech,
Ask me not to speak unspeakable love.’
‘For love such as ours is quite often rare,
Outshining all the world’s most precious gold,
Now carried on fortunate wings of air,
Legacies from masters of ages old.’
‘But many times is love cruelly disproved
by lust or greed or foolish jealousies,
The charlatans, whose masks have been removed,
And strike the heart like an unseen disease.’
‘This is the conflict betwixt words and I,
For there are words enough for those untrue.
But the words of men must wither and die
In the light of the love I have for you.’
