Extinct and forgotten by most,
but some still sing,
accompany you as you play
the shamisen.
How beautiful and precious
to live in the flower
and willow world!
(Is it a tender blossom or a butterfly?)
Whatever, nanigoto mo, it doesn’t matter
that not so long ago
you were a star
however brief you flickered.
Mourning the death of you,
a lingering speck of dust,
your oiled wigs so like spring peaches,
A full kimono, silk 12 layers deep;
Maiko cross golden bridges
to greet a red dragon
on the other side.
(If it’s a shallow river lift your skirts to
your knees)
Beautiful girl,
I see you sitting, painfully subdued
on a tatami mat,
sipping ginger sake,
your okobo wait at the door
while men fling innuendo your way.
No you will not roll over
but you will sing
(as the water deepens, unties your sashes
please.)
