The Dance before Death

* * *
I call Him Siva, again and again Siva
I pray Him to appear before mind’s eye.
O Siva, appear in the gem studded hall in
My heart to destroy sins and to bless me
With a vision for my blissful salvation!
I am not enamored of the celestial joys
I did not desire the worldly possessions
I only want to witness thy blissful dance
O Great God! Grant me this last desire!!

Here in the great dancing hall of my heart
All Gods and goddesses joined to create
Orchestra to Thee with various instruments;
Thy cosmic Bull took charge of the drums
The lord of speech taken up the cymbals
Vishnu a double sided drum, Mother Kaali
A clarion and the goddess of speech a lute
Laxmi the goddess of beauty a wind pipe,
Indra a flute and Bana a thousand faced drum
The other gods various kinds of instruments!

O Siva O Lord of universe O Lord of Lalita
Art thou ready in the minimum attire revealing
All thy features having a tiger skin of delusion
Around thy loins fastened and ashes of nebulas
Smeared allover thy shining crystalline limbs
And the snakes of cosmic winds with lustrous
Red gems on their hoods did intertwine with
Thy matted locks and a crescent moon shines
In thy locks where the heavenly Ganges with
Currents of the milky ways hidden like a lotus;
Thou hast entered the hall of gems in the evening
Twilight with smiles of lightening on thy face
Doest thou bestow divine sight to see thy dance!

At the very sign of thy brow cosmic bull Nandi
Sounded the drum of Naandi to start thy dance
It was like the chants of Omkara and Humkara
Hum, hum, dhim, dhim, hum, hum, dhim dhim
Was followed by the orchestra of the gods and
Goddesses with lute, flute, clarion and the pipes
In sweet tune along with rhythmic beat of drums
The Goddesses of speech, beauty and power started
Their chorus as Mother of the world began to sing
In the accompaniment of the musical instruments!

Siva, the Lord of eternal time and the King dancer
Commenced his dance with rhythmic movements
Of his limbs while the gods were thrilled with joy;
His bound up matted locks loosened by the tempo
Of his dance, and sprays of water from heavenly
Ganges on His head sprinkled all around on the gods
And swift movements of his spreading matted locks
Scattered the stars in the sky like jasmine flowers and
The vigorous movements of his hands scattered a mist
Of the sacred ashes of the nebulas and galaxies lost
Created the illusion of a white curtain behind him
As sages, celestials reverently smeared the sprinkled
Ashes on their chests to attain the eternal bliss of Lord;
As the dance gathered momentum along with the song
Meaning rendered by the hands, and the moods by
The glances, and rhythm marked by the feet of Lord,
Where the hands moved the glances followed; and
Where the glances went the mind followed; and
Where the mind went the mood followed; and where
The mood went there was the flavor of supreme bliss!

As I witnessed the dance of Lord I heard holy chants
And the mantras surging forth in rhythmic crescendos
Om Namah Sivaya, Hara, Hara Mahadev Sambho Om
Then after a hush, Brahma and Saraswati started a hymn
In a low voice along with playing of the lute and flute
While other instruments were silent, then light became
Dim, and nothing was visible except the dance of Lord
Who seemed to have withdrawn the entire universe into
His supreme self of bliss and looked as though the Lord
Danced far beyond the darkness in his own effulgence
And turned into Great Ocean of light spreading the light
To the quarters through waves of dancing bliss; there after
I turned into a star and merged in the waves of blissful light!

Om Namah Sivaya!

i enjoyed this greatly.. it is very musical..
i liked the hum hum dhim dhim part that was cool onomatopia

um because of the enormity of the peice as in the amount that is packed into every line i think it could be maybe 2 stanzas shorter. i noticed this is where i began to lose grasp of the piece as an entirety.

trivially, some of the words were repeated such as heavenly ganges... this is never a good thing to practice in any sort of writing, as diversity expresses creativity...

you should try to decrease your use of the word 'the' . since poetry is often about utilizing the richest and powerful words and harnessing them with as little obstruction, words such as these that are all but unnessecary appear as tiny black holes that suck the interest and life out of otherwise terribly impacting poetry.

you must realize that if i didnt value your poem greatly i wouldnt have taken the time to comment on it. as i said, i really enjoyed this peice. it hits me with the same fullness of writing as Tolkien's writing. but true to my nature, if i see things that i find lacking, i will comment as such.

good luck,
keep up the power,

sincerely,
C+

A true epic in every sense of the word, the incredible scope of this piece left me speechless. These rich, vibrant images are all I can see when I close my eyes. Yes, this may very well be your finest work (although there's plenty of competition!). Take a bow, you've earned it.

Truly,
-V.S.

This is wonderful. You know, I was born in Indonesia and adopted by Dutchies, so I have a rather 'western' mind, but they way you wrote this prayer really awoke something in me. It dances, I can hear the rhytm in my mind. Splendid.
