There once was a simple man
who had a quiet smile.
Along the way that man has changed.
His smile has been gone for a while.
He used to condemn the dishonest,
the egotist and liars.
He has since become those things and
it pierces my heart like briars.
I wonder why he turned his back
on loyalty, compassion and truth.
His behavior of late
can only be described as uncouth.
No longer a friendly word
to the people that he meets.
He's become so self-absorbed
at my very soul it eats.
I miss my caring, open friend,
like a flower misses rain.
But, the King of Ego
will never be the same.
