The embers crackled, the ash arose
The grand clock chimed its hourly chord
And there I sat upon a chair
Pondering words and saintly lore
"Who calls?" said I as my ears bent
Towards the tall and solid door
Three times they knocked, knocked, knocked
Three times they knocked and then no more
I stood and listened with bated breath
I sang a song inside my mind
"Tis just my thoughts" I told myself
Not foe of evil, or friend of kind
But then the knocking came again
Three pounds upon the solid door
"Speak" said I, "Who may you be?"
Three times they knocked and then no more
I took a step back to my chair
I closed my eyes and begged for peace
"Be gone!" I begged with nervous fear
"Be gone and leave my soul at ease"
Three knocks they came, one two three
There on my tall and sturdy door
In held a hope tightly in hand
Three knocks there came and nothing more
"Be gone you devil, away with you!"
I knew who came knocking for me
'Twas my fear, my dark, my secret
Each knock for a fear and there were three
