DEAR SON
SON, I LIE AWAKE AND WATCH YOU SLEEPING,
SEEING YOUR CHEST MORE UP AND DOWN.
HANDS HOLDED, AND EYES SHUT TIGHT,
WITH YOUR MOUTH DRAWN TO A LITTLE FROWN.
IN MY MIND I START TO WONDER,
WHO YOU’LL TURN OUT TO BE.
WILL YOU BE LIKE YOUR MOTHER,
OR WILL YOU LEAN ALITTLE TOWARDS ME.
I WORRY ABOUT THE WORLD IN WHICH WE BROUGHT YOU,
TO LIVE OUT YOUR YOUTHFUL YEARS.
KNOWING YOU’LL FIND SUCH LOVE AND HAPPINESS,
BUT ALSO KNOWING YOU’LL FIND SO MANY TEARS.
THERE WILL BE TIMES WHEN PEOPLE WILL HURT YOU,
AND PUT YOUR BACK AGAINST THE WALL.
I’M SO AFRAID I WON’T BE THERE TO CATCH YOU,
IF EVER YOU MIGHT TEND TO FALL.
ALL I CAN DO IS TRY TO PROTECT YOU,
AND PREPARE YOU FOR WHAT LIES AHEAD.
TEACH YOU HONESTY AND INTEGERITY,
AND TO SAY A PRAYER BEFORE YOU GO TO BED.
YOU’LL SOON BE GROWN AND ON YOUR OWN,
AS THESE YEARS WILL TEND TO FLY.
AND I PRAY YOU’LL DECIDE TO STAY AND LIVE,
WHERE YOUR MOTHER AND I WILL BE CLOSE BY.
ALL THESE THINGS CAUSE MY MIND TO WONDER,
AS A STARE AT YOUR PRECIOUS FACE.
I KNOW IN MY HEART YOU’LL TURN OUT FINE
IN YOUR OWN TIME AND PLACE.
