Henry was a learned man,
Who’s poetry inspired,
Yet they say he never wrote of love,
Nor of his hearts desires,
Almost as though his heart was stone,
And love could not get through,
But deep inside, concealed by pride,
I’m sure that Henry knew,
The pain of love that passed away,
Before it had time to grow,
Just read between the lines of works,
Like “You think that I don’t know”,
There clearly on the milky page,
Between the black ink stains,
A heart that’s filled with so much love,
Yet cries out to us in pain,
For a love that died before its time,
And while he was away,
Henry knew the pain of love,
More than he cared to say,
He knew the joy of perfect love,
How it made his young heart race,
Too late he learnt that when it’s gone,
No force can take its place,
Don’t speak of love as mystery,
Known only by a few,
And don’t explain about the pain,
For it’s clear that Henry knew,
He wrote of war, he wrote of peace,
Oft times he wrote of fate,
But never could he write of love,
Unless his heart should break,
His poem that I quoted,
Closer to the start,
Was not written to find sympathy,
For his badly broken heart,
Moreover as an explanation,
To those who read his work,
Why he’d never write love poems,
For too badly they would hurt,
They say that he drank heavily,
And in truth maybe he did,
The only way he knew perhaps,
To conceal the pain he hid,
For it cannot have been easy,
To bare such grief and pain,
So much that it would break his heart,
To even write her name,
To me he seemed a tortured soul,
I pray that I am wrong,
But I think he waited patiently,
For death to come along,
To re-unite him with the love,
He’d lost so long ago,
Don’t talk to him of love and loss,
For he already knows,
What Henry said with silence,
Was more than any words could do,
He didn’t need to write in verse,
The things that Henry knew,
He knew one day that he would be,
There at his lovers side,
Reciting verses filled with love,
To her in paradise,
