Freedom of the Poet

Contributed by norm on Tuesday, 3rd February 2004 @ 04:27:20 PM in AEST
Topic: dedicatedpoems

Please don't ask me should we mar
A poem you think has gone too far.
A poem you feel has crossed the line,
A subject which is not to fine.

That talks of death or suicide,
And fools the reader on the side,
That you have judged to be perverse,
The poet goes so far as curse.

Please don't ask me get the tar,
Should we stop or should we bar,
You should not write of this or that,
You might hurt an aristocrat.

I tell you this, please stay awake,
I'll burn no one at any stake,
I'll drive no bolt thru any heart,
Go you think I'm not too smart.

I'll ban no poem in Boston Square,
Such a thing once happened there,
I'll not protest or make a fuss
I will not yell nor will I cuss.

The first amendment should assure,
A person's free to write impure,
I'll not be the one to carp,
Nor will I play a golden harp.

Any banning to be done,
Doesn't help and hurts the fun.
Next time it might be you,
That someone says, "It will not do.

Dear Norm,
I'm with you 100% if you speak of Boston
Square, but if you are speaking of right here,
YPDC, the two are different you see.
This is a private site owned and operated by
Mick. He sets the rules, and regulations, and
when we sign on, we agree, that is why there
are monitors to see, that bad language, and
outstanding filth is monitored out. For without
some kind of guide lines we would have
complete apathy!
In any society that I've ever studied, without
some kind of guide lines, those that want to
abide are going to be nullified! So if you are
speaking of this particular site, I've visited
other poetry site also, and they too have many
regulations to protect those who want to
abide. Why should those who do not be
given free rein, to run over the rights and
feelings of those who would refrain?
If it's Boston Square, I'll be there to protest....
but if it's a private site where one agrees to
do as the Webmaster will write, then I have
to say......those who will not abide....must be put to bay.

all right Norm - freedom of speech - writers must be free to express themselves, whether it's popular or not.
And as always Norm, you said it so well in your poem

I go along with what you say
but regret there's a price to pay
have your freedom if you must
and pay the price in truth and trust
