What do I say when I get home
The tears I’ll see when I get off alone
I’ve failed him now and I’m with grief
His death has filled me with much disbelief
I remember we talked on the sad cold day
We even sat together before battle to pray
We marched together side by side
Or strength and honor or fear did hide
The trumpet sounded. We answered the call
Such blood and gore I never have saw
But what shook me and pained me great
Was when Johnny met his fate.
That very moment my strength did fall
Like the crumbling of a great wall
I tried my best but it was too late
Johnny had passed on to that gate
Why little Johnny my friend so deer
I was filled with so much fear
I wish to go I wasn’t home
At least not now when I’m all alone

I don't know what inspired it either, but I have a friend who saw a lot of comrades die in viet Nam...he feels guilty because he lived. I wrote a poem about it ...my brother in law was a medic over there and he saw so many terrible things...he had nightmares and finally took his own life. Your poem reminds me of all that... |
