She wears her teenaged innocence
In the colors of black and blue
If you question her to closely
She'll turn away from you
What she sees as misguided love
Is really a form of hate
She thinks about making changes
Before it's just to late
She turns to Dad for guidance
He knows little of her tale
She's never hinted of the abuse she's withstood
She'll save him from the detail
When she approaches Dad
His response is "I'm to busy for you right now."
She tries to make him see she needs his help
But she doesn't quite know how
"It's ok, I can handle this."
She murmurs in her head
Then "he" found out she went to Dad
And beat her till she bled
Trapped in this situation
She tries so hard to get out
It's one step forward and three steps back
A bleak future, she has no doubt
Another day passes, another beating occurs
She withstands a further attack
"How can a 22 year old hate so much?"
A soul "he" seems to lack
Not sure how much more she can take
Things are looking bleak
Worried about his reaction
To her brother, she will speak
Once told of her tales of terror
He stares at her in shock
"Worry no more, little sister"
"I will become your rock"
Big brother holds little sister
He tries to absorb her pain
To hear the mistreatment she speaks of
It's slowly driving him insane
"Did you talk to Dad?" he asks her
"I tried, but he won't hear."
To her now unstable brother
His mission has become quite clear
He spends a lot of time with her
Bringing out the girl inside
She forgot this side of herself
She thought that part had died
They spend their time together talking
He rebuilds her self-esteem
As she begins to come out of her shell
He begins to scheme
Unknown to her and her abuser
Her brother has grand plans
A single thought runs through his head
"I'll kill him with my bare hands!"
Big brother stalks the abuser
The abuser's unaware of his fate
Her brother finds him in a bar
He approaches him, irate
"How dare you touch my sister" he hisses
"You're twice the size of her!"
"Go near her again, and I'll beat you, boy"
"Of that you can be sure."
Abuser smirks at brother
"Just who the hell are you?"
"What's your plan, to threaten me?"
If the abuser only knew...
A vision passes through his head
Of his sister bloodied and broken
No need for words, he grabs his neck
His intentions left unspoken
Grinning at him, he begins to squeeze
Terror passes through the others eyes
"This is some of what my sister felt!"
He snarls, as the other man cries
Her abuser never again came near her
Seeing her filled him with dread
For every time he looked at her
Terror filled his head
Every day she thanks God for her brother
From the abyss, he pulled her away
But inside her remains uncertainty
She can't seem to keep it at bay
Years have gone by, they both grew older
But the ghost is still inside
Of the pain and the humiliation
That she continues to try to hide.

You did a really good job of telling this painful, yet inspirational poem. I personally want to thank you for it, because I was the older brother in this story to my sister. If you want to read about a similar experiance, please find jason robert britt in the archives and read "Dragging Me Down With You." it is about all the times as a child I walked in on my father molesting my sister, and then how he'd beat me up out of spite so i would be afraid of him. you'll be happy to know that the story ends when i called the police on him and had him locked away. no one in the family has talked to him now for six years. I spent many years by my sisters side, trying to protect her and love her, show here someone cared. I read your poem as a tribute to your brother, who was the only person there when you were in a hard place. And you've inspired me to post a poem my sister wrote for me a few years ago. Thank you and remember to love each other unconditionally. |
