I cannot say I was there
Nor can I say I really understand
But I what I can say, is that I see the pain
Hear it in your voice; see it in your eyes
Almost making me not want to hear
For all you men have done to take a stand
For our country during Vietnam
A painful political war full of lies
Why our men must have endured the slain
A book I read, called “We Were Soldiers Once… And Young”
Was a direct impact on reality of war
How we civilians sat here in comfort and fun,
Our young soldiers fought, what courage stood for
That book was long to read, intense, hard to the mind
Gave the real account of what those soldiers done.
A movie based upon the book
Seemed to be the only one that gave words to find
The graphic images of war a permant look
This part of Vietnam War was the beginning
To the only end of really not winning
Too bad our Government didn’t see the outcome
Letting the politicians have their fun
Why our young men fought with such desire
For a war that put out their dreams of American fire
This civilian can only have words of empathy
For what our American troops performed exemplary
Now years later, Vietnam Vets finally get their dues
But long in coming it’s still not enough
I’m sorry for our soldiers who have died
Brave they fought with all, nothing to hide
I cry for you all, glad it just isn’t old news
This book and movie made it come alive
Making the World see how rough and tough
Those Soldiers that went thru to try and survive

I grew up in a Military atmosphere. Although, I had a good life in many aspects, I also endured the rough part of being raised harshly in terms of survival. It was necessary, and well taught, for I do see what others pained thru in life. Our Soldiers have endured much, some of the events not spoken until years later. Someday, I will put into words of such a soldier who did just this, and only I heard his story for the first time in his 20yrs. of being silent. I do understand, enough to only tred partially in some of those shoes, and also know how I cherish my freedom for those soldiers who won, fought for us here in America. Yes, a soldiers life, comes from many scars.
take care and be safe,
AmberRose :) |
