The truth in the mirror

------________---------

We stood there side by side, both with a constant grin.
Each one thinking they where superior within.
Before us stood a mirror, a mirror that showed the truth,
A mirror that showed the kind as well as the uncouth.

First she stepped forward, and gazed into the mirror.
A hundred thousand faces, before her did appear.
The faces of her neighbors, her family and her friends.
Of enemies forever loathed, and enemies made amends.

The unfamiliar faces, of people she'd never seen.
Of people she would be, and people that she'd been.
Long she sat there gazing at the image she had made.
At the image of truth, but the image began to fade.

She did then step back, and the dreaded moment came.
She had looked into the mirror, and I must do the same.
I stepped before the mirror, just as she had done,
Thinking I'd see an image I certainly must shun.

But I did not see a monster, I did not see a beast.
On an image of my true self, did my pupils feast.
What I saw was only, the visage of my face.
My heartbeat now began, a slowing of it's pace.

As the image faded my mind was now content,
I was no one but myself, my face not merely lent.
I turned now to her, and flashed again a smile,
A tear rolled from her eye, and shattered upon the tile.

She thought she had been special, she thought she had been loud.
She found that she was just another face amidst the crowd.
I simply walked past her for nothing could be told,
In the end it seems she simply fit the mold.

I can relate to this one. I think though, sometimes when we look into that mirror, we see only what we want to see, but what we want to see before we look into the mirror, is not what is shown to us. I enjoyed this poem. Very good one.
