Walking out of that old, squeaky building,
energized on sunlight and the open-forum
honest, naked happy that my intimate connection
with other minds brings me,
I smile the stupid smile of a four-year-old
seeing a puppy or a train or airplane or truck
or block or water or grass or any of the other
infinitely many things that once amazed
and enthralled me to no impatient end.
And, in smiling, completely happy with the
state of my world, I stamp and run awkwardly
through the fallen leaves just for the sake
of hearing the ringing pleasantries of my sandals
slapping against the sidewalk, surely making an ass
of myself in front of the people I was too uncaring
to notice.
This is what life is about. Truth, honesty,
and unrestrained freedom.
This is what love is about. Comfort, security,
and tenderness even in times of conflict.
