My Country Tis Of Thee

My Country Tis of Thee

A colorful coral serpent slithers
awkwardly towards me.
Seductively he strides like a Prince
carving his initials in the sand
with “s” prints.
My conscious speaks of hesitance as the snake’s tongue tastes the sky.
A wheezy cry escapes my throat
I’m having a panic attack
I can’t react my knees are cracked
and my arm is shot.

I plead to know why I must suffer the agony
Why am I here?
As the last drops of my tear
soak the salty sands under my nose
and a tumbleweed blows away
as the winds howl a growl
in the dawn of day.
There must be someway
to escape the venomous creature
Perhaps live a few days before
I become a feeding feature.

You know a preacher once said
the road to heaven is the road not taken
Which one, where was I mistaken?
When does it end?
All my life I tried to pretend I am what I am
and can be all I can be.
My duty, my boot camp, my training,
my salute to our flag
Now I drag my camouflage suit,
my assault rifle,
& my badge across my enemies grounds
My neighborhood towns would never see
a tortured hero’s death
Watch a soldiers last breath
or hear a man’s last request.

And why is that?

Is that because we’re the land of the free
Nobody dare enter our country
and fight for our personal liberty.
We threaten everyone
with our army and nuclear facilities
I could be court marshaled
for even speaking these
Thoughts, attitudes, in fact concerns
I’m here to return a democracy
by making us a mockery.

(Hiss…) Why must that snake just stand there
and stare at me
Bite me already kill me
I’m here come on I’m ready.
Selfishly he knows as he twists and he turns
as he churns and he wallows
as he waits I swallow
my last spit of coughed up blood.

My wife made a mistake marrying me
and my child has had a birth without me.
I’m the bastard, the devil in humanity
everything I was man enough to be
has ended so tragically.
I’m mad at me and sorry for the world.
My little girl will be angry to a nation
grow with aggravation
and hate a population.
My resignation speaks for itself as I lay
helpless in misery
Knowing I can’t change history.

My mystery remains a secret
to those who have not found me
and to the world not around me.
I’ve found thee America I know your game
your name belongs there with Hussein.
Your so vain you probably think
I should salute you
When really: I should shoot you.
You know when two people think alike
it's reproduction.
What you did was a production of
cause and reaction
A war chant action for
your economic satisfaction.

My attraction was to uphold and protect
to respect & punish the heroism in terrorism.
My mannerism was not to bully a country
harass a military, and fight alone against the will of everybody.

I can’t last too much longer that snake
just waits for me to die
So he can spy and let the other guy
pick away at me.
I can’t believe this is happening to me
I had it so well
Now I’m in hell with the serpent of the West.

My poor nation what have you done:
Why this gun?
Why these people? Why this land?
Why am I the man, the soldier, the puritan
The republican
a participant in a negligent homicide.
I joined to ride proud with honor
in helping mankind
not devour and rule all kind.
I’m a lost mind maybe I’m wrong
maybe it's the song?
My country Tis of thee... sweet land of liberty
but what do I see?
Land where my fathers died
and the Indians cried
Land of the pilgrim’s virtues
and the hate that will curse you.
I always knew I was naïve
to believe my generation
would make a difference.
We only made a preference in preferring
to referring us
as the greatest nation in the world.

Snake!! Coward serpent!!!
I yell to the eyes that just tease
He just stares and sees my crippled soul
resting his whole head proudly
and singing his song
that tongue so long
drags every chord to the note
my hand wishes to choke
that monster to death.

(Ahhhh) I’m bit, it’s done I can leave
I believe in my people to help us stop dying
I believe they're trying
to save the land of the noble free
I love my wife & my baby & thy rocks and hills
With all the thrills let all breathe partake
My last date with freedom and liberty
Sergeant I’m free this is what
my country Tis of thee…

Your poem touched me for I read and understood.
my brother a marine went to iraq and came back.
who likes war. what is it for ?
only thing I see is fighting makes me free, your wife and your daughter.
YOU fight so they wont come over here and hurt us. instead you stand there on different ground to protect us.
thank you. I know you dont want to hear that. my brother even said that when he got back. because of the hell he went through.
but he did it just like you do.take care ..
My prayer list will have a new name on it
jacktripper... sad that he died isnt it... john ritter. sandy

Wow! That was the best poem on the war I've ever read. I'm an American soldier against the war in Iraq myself, and I joined for the same reasons as you said in your poem, and am also as disillusioned as you say in the poem. All of my other battle buddies are as well.

And if you read my poem "Please, Mr. Bush!", you'd know why I'd still go over there and fight in half a second.
