Alzheimers Plays For Keeps

Contributed by maryetta on Monday, 26th January 2004 @ 05:20:02 AM in AEST
Topic: Grief

we begin our passage of pain in the early stages
you see very little except for the forgetfullness
as time passes it all seems such a slow progress
one morning you wake as usual and reality hits
you suddenly know alzheimers plays for keeps

we suddenly find them following everywhere we go
you step from the room and they begin calling you
there is now no private times available for you
weve discovered the world of shadowing in its glory
you suddenly know alzheimers plays for keeps

then you may find another world open up for you
this appears when the sun retreats for the night
they become disoriented and confused you cant reason
welcome to the world of sundowning you can do without
you suddenly know alzheimers plays for keeps

it continues to get worse their world and your world
no longer meets the person you knew no longer exist
you live a world apart you share your home with a
stranger and you begin to feel the terror of alzheimers
you suddenly know alzheimers play for keeps

the worst is yet to come when they are no longer able
to function their body begins to shut down one by one
till the inevitable happens they are released you feel
relief that your agony is over but then you feel lonliness
you suddenly know alzheimers plays for keeps

Oh my dear friend,
this is heart breaking but stills needs to be told.
My heart is with u and take care of yourself too. I know what it's like to watch your parents dieing but not from altimers but either way it's so hard on the care giver
(you) 2 watch a luved one quietly give in then go on.
Before My Mom passed in 1979 with melanoma cancer I took care of her in my home. After she went into a coma we were praying to God if she wasn't gonna be healed to take her out of the suffering. She lasted one nite in the hospital and the next day she was at peace.
God bless u for sharing this agony as I'm sure others will realize they arn't alone.
luv, huggs,
emy

You hit this one right on the head! I feel that it is so unfortunate for families to go throught this. Especially when they really do not understand it. I work with Alzheimers patients everyday and it it so hard on their families to try to deal with the swift changes in their loved one. Then one day they come to see them and they don't even recognize them. It's so hard, but people do need to be more aware of this. Great write!

I lost my mother to Alzheimers, just this morning. This grim and cruel disease slowly took her mind many years ago. It finally took her body this morn. Her pain is past, but the lonliness is sharp and painful.

Thanks for the poem...
