I Murdered My Best Friend
January 16, 2004
At first I thought it was my reflection,
Who never left my side,
The one constant in which I could confide.
But when the glass shattered,
I saw what really mattered,
And it wasn't perfection in a reflection.
Then I thought it was my shadow,
Who would always be near me,
Bowing at my feet.
But then I saw as nighttime came,
The shadow dissolved and was never the same.
After, I thought it was my dreams.
They were there every night to tuck me in tight,
And I never worried they'd leave.
But then I discovered when the sun came up,
The dreams were a rapid not seen.
And a nightmare was there on some cold, chilly nights,
And the dreams were only my frights.
Well then who, I asked, was my best friend?
If not my reflection, shadow, or dreams?
Who, I asked, would be there until the end?
It was then that I saw and I finally knew,
That my best friend was there all along.
In my mind and my heart and my soul too,
That was where my best friend belonged.
Time spent with her too long,
And we began to grow apart.
I never thought I'd ever start,
An argument with a piece of my heart.
But my best friend became my worst enemy,
And there was no one to tell but her.
So alone with no advice to guide,
I took out my knife and ended her life.
I murdered my best friend.
The voice in my head begged for one last chance,
But the deed had been done without a second glance.
It was a shame I got to see,
Who she really was in me.
Because from that day on we grew so tight,
I never saw another fight.
My conscience was the end to her own life,
A death by my hands,
To my best friend.

this write reminds me of one of the biblical prophets, not sure but I think it was Paul that said, I die daily.
This is a very good write cause when self gets out of the way our lives begin.
I understand it clearly.
Awesome work.
peace, joy, luv, huggs,

Excellent poem, Ithink your best friend was your subconcious mind, the one that told you not to do things, but were you listening? Hope I haven't got it totally wrong! Well done.

Hmmm, when I read poetry I tend to look for the most un-obvious answer, I reckon that what your describing here, is that you are the best friend, and its some kind of nightmare, where you take your own life, and you see yourself as your best friend or something like that... I'm probably wrong tough... Besides that great poem (had to fall in with expectation)

Ok.. I'm going to start by saying great title you capture your audience. Now it seems to me the narrator is unhappy with themself in the poem and yes the best friend is the narrator as well. They looked in the mirror and didn't like what they saw. They could not face the reality so they where angry. In fact it's as if the knife represented a cutting of food? I'm under the pretense that the best friend was an anorexic? And finally "death by hands" indicated eating and not letting themself starve anymore. I went off the scale on this one but I think it's possible. But great job that is true poetry. |
