She walked along the roads edge.
My headlights illuminating her petite figure.
The spotlight of my patrol car illuminating the path before her.
Her eyes reflecting the light as a burning flame.
The brown station wagon had it’s hood up
As she walked away from it down a long deserted stretch
Of roadway, on a top secret military post.
I exited the cruiser, in full military police uniform
And weapon on my right hip.
I asked the woman if I could be of help,
As it was approaching midnight,
And I was halfway through a 12 hour shift.
She acted as if she didn’t know I was even there,
Her long white flowing gown blowing in a brisk ,chilling breeze.
I allowed her to continue to walk
But continued to follow her in the cruiser,
Still illuminating the path before her.
She finally entered an area where buildings existed.
She walked toward an old Army Chapel building,
An old church from the late 1700’s now on the historical register
Even though the building was padlocked and off limits to everyone,
She walked through the front door without it opening and disappeared inside.
Using my spotlight and looking up, I saw her figure
Through a window as she ascended a spiral staircase.
I radioed to have a supervisor meet me at that location,
The hair still standing upright on my head and neck.
Upon arriving I began to stutter as I told my supervisor
Exactly what had happened, but it all came gushing out in
An excited, unintelligable uttering.
The sergeant only whispered, “not again.”
More chills went up my spine.
My next act was to do a tag registration check on the vehicle
And contact it’s current owner.
The Colonel came to the door dressed in a robe,
And rubbing his eyes with his hands, as it was now 0100 hours.
He said “Will this ever end?” “Where is it now?”
I drove him to the site where the vehicle had been.
It was no longer on post and no one had exited the secure gates.
He explained that his wife had died in an accident in that very car
And that both had burned beyond recognition.
Every year since then on the anniversary of that terrible day,
She returned to Post and walked to the chapel where they were married.
