Oh, Daddy
If I told you
I loved him harder than
Rock candy
And I believed him
To sparkle
That he wouldn't
Break me

If I told you
He had buttons
Sewn to his chest
And if I pushed one
With my independent tongue
The switch turned on
And his mood spun like a ceiling fan

Oh daddy,
I watched him
Accelerate
To a place I saw you go before
When mother pushed your button
And your fist
Went through
The pantry door
And the hole
That split me
Wide open
Stayed there without repair
Baking in the kitchen
Like burnt air

But Daddy, the memory
Is always there like a birthmark
I've spent years forgetting
Covering up
Stitching my mouth shut

And his voice, like yours
Is carbonated,
Wake me when the roof blows off
And all the birds fly away
—The birds can
Fly away

Oh Daddy, please explain
How breaking things
Is brave
Just criss-crossed signals
From the brain
How you lost your ears
So you wouldn't hear
What mother had to say

Now Daddy
Don't be alarmed
You were the one
Who taught me
That cannibal sound
And I should have turned around
Seen the pain line on my palm

A little girl who used to sew
Your buttons
Back on
