Cherished Prize

As I traveled down the road, the dusk began to grow,
And the sun in my car’s mirror was just a subtle glow,
The radio played my favorite tune and I hummed it on the way,
As I headed home from work again, the end of this fine day.

I knew that when I entered in, my family I would greet,
My son a freckled nine year old, my daughter six and sweet,
My wife would greet me with a hug and tell me of her day,
Describing what the kids had done and crazy things they’d say.

It’s then I noticed, past the hill, a distant plume of smoke,
And I rolled up all the windows, so that I wouldn’t choke.
But as the fire came in sight, I realized with fear,
My house is what had caused the smoke and my family had been here.

I stopped the car and bounded out, they tried to keep me back,
‘Til I told them how the house was mine and my family I did track,
They brought me to the man in charge, he had a solemn face,
And he brought me ‘round behind the truck, it was a safer place.

He looked at me with soot stained eyes and I dreaded what he’d say,
And silently I said a prayer, for my family on that day.
Then he said, “I’m sorry sir to tell you, and I wish it wasn’t so,
But this house of yours cannot be saved, I thought that you should know.”

When he paused to catch his breath, it seemed the moment wouldn’t end,
But he looked at me with softer eyes, “You’re lucky though my friend.
It seems your family was inside but everyone’s ok,
Still we took them to the hospital, it isn’t far away.”

My heart it raced so frantically as I realized how close,
I had come to losing everything that meant to me the most.
I made a vow right then and there, to always realize,
That every day with those I love, it is a cherished prize.

Family is the most important thing there is. The near loss of them can make you see it more clearly then ever.
Well done Doug

You know, this poem finally explained all that I've been trying to explain to my family and friends.Sadly,I had to go through a near-death experience to fully realize how precious my family was to me.Since then, everything has changed in my life.I'm really glad I got to read a write on stuff like this, you made me realize once more how lucky I really am.Thank you,
PumpkinPie
