Spilled Milk

Contributed by manicmuze on Friday, 16th January 2004 @ 11:23:30 AM in AEST
Topic: oops

i watch her love my father
and i see him
allow her

differently, than the way
he let me watch him read
or stand near the edge of the driveway
as he laid fresh blacktop each summer
with a huge broom
made to sweep things
under other things or out of the way

i hear her say "i love you daddy"
and i listen, as my thirty-year old echo
runs in through the back screen door
and stands at attention in the kitchen
—hopeful

and a voice i'd know any time
responds
—out loud, unbridled,
as if those words came naturally
—too.
"i love you too"
free flowing

and all my little girl hope
and dreams
spill into this

her hand snug in his
—second chances

a puddle on the kitchen floor

Great it made a change to the run of the mill poems. The best line right at the end. A puddle on the floor. I seem to remember that kitchen,I was three years old at the time of my puddle on the floor. Thanks for taking me back so many years. Have a great day now from bernard.
