Mother's Tears

Standing there, the mourners looked upon her gentle face,
As in this darkened time of sorrow, she took her rightful place.
She drew a breath to give her strength, inside an awful mess,
And held the stand, her fingers white from the way they pressed.
Then she lifted up her head and looked upon the crowd,
And in a voice that was quite clear, though not considered loud,
She began her eulogy, a story from her heart,
And talked about the one she loved, who'd been there from the start.
“When I came into this world, mom’s tears they fell like rain,
From the joy and love she felt for me, regardless of the pain,
And in her arms she held me tight and showed me that she cared,
My mothers tears, a precious gift, the first she ever shared.
Then when I was a little girl, she kept me safe and warm,
Giving me her courage and protecting me from harm,
Her lips they’d heal my cuts and scrapes, the ones I’d get each day,
And every bump or bruise I got, she kissed them all away.
As I grew I’d fall in love, yet with every broken heart,
She was there to comfort me, so I’d never fall apart.
I noticed then, the tears she shed, each time I was in pain,
And how at times her pride for me would bring those drops again.
But when I asked her why she cried, she’d tell me through the tears,
That love is shed for those held dear, when sharing hopes and fears.
When someone means the world to you, they touch you deep inside,
And you’ll live for them in all they do, your feelings you can’t hide.
Now I can’t recall a single tear she shed for just herself,
As though she took her pain and fear and placed it on a shelf.
And every time I think of her, the one thing that I see,
Are my mothers tears, shed with love, and what they meant to me.”
With that a tear fell down her cheek, the love she could not share,
But with her finger took the tear, and handled it with care,
Then walked to where her mother lay, no one dared to speak,
And placed the tear she shed in love upon her mother’s cheek.
